The history of the Hotel Bergwirt Vienna Schönbrunn

In 1911 the magistrate district office of the K.K. Imperial capital and residential city Vienna received the building permit for the residential building at Maxingstrasse 76, at the corner of Montecuccoliplatz. The building, built in the elegant Art Nouveau style, was decorated with architectural highlights such as a bay window, a loggia, dormer windows and a striking tower lantern.

Nine spacious apartments were built, each equipped with servants' quarters and a bathroom - a comfort that was trend-setting at the time. In 1912, the inn “Zum Bergwirt” opened its doors and quickly established itself as a popular excursion destination, located near the Elisabethallee on the Küniglberg. The inn was equipped with rustic Zirbelstuben and offered its guests a cozy atmosphere. Next to the entrance door, the stone face of Bacchus, the god of wine and joy of life, still invites you to linger.

In 1959, Monika and Franz Grauer took over the “Zum Bergwirt” inn as tenants and finally purchased the house in 1968. With a lot of commitment and vision, they expanded the business in the following years to include a parlor and a coffee house to offer guests even more comfort and enjoyment.

In 1978 the building was converted into a modern hotel. The result was a stylish hotel with 24 rooms (58 beds), equipped with a bathroom, TV, minibar and telephone. In 1987, the impressive Elisabeth Salon was added in the basement, which is ideal for weddings and family celebrations for up to 90 people. A charming Art Nouveau hotel bar was also opened, which still welcomes guests from all over the world to this day.

In 2005, the family handed the traditional house over to their youngest daughter, Elisabeth Grauer-Stopfer. Since then, together with her older sister Anna Rischer, she has been running the business with a lot of dedication and passion. The well-rehearsed team of sisters leads the family business into the modern age without losing sight of traditional Viennese hospitality.

A comprehensive modernization took place between 2005 and 2006. Not only was a new elevator system and a chic reception installed, but the rooms were also brought up to date. Freshly renovated and modernly equipped, the hotel now shines in new splendor and offers its guests contemporary comfort. But the story doesn't end there - renovations are constantly being carried out and innovative ideas are being implemented in order to always offer guests a very special experience.

The Hotel Bergwirt Schönbrunn will continue to be maintained as a place where Viennese tradition and modern comfort go hand in hand - with a lot of love and commitment from the Grauer-Stopfer family.
